Bluff City Liars brings the beat once again to TheatreWorks for the 2nd Annual Liars’ Ball! (if you count our April Fools Ball last year as the first one, which I will)
Join us for one or both nights of improv comedy accompanied by and even inspired by live music from great local artists. The talented Louise Page will serenade you on Friday, while Saturday will see the raw electricity of Rosey *(tentatively, subject to change).

KEVIN McDONALD SUPERSTAR
Kevin McDonald of The Kids in the Hall returns to Memphis for another riotous weekend of comedy shows and workshops. Join us at Black Lodge the evening of April 13th for a rock opera called Cheaters in Love written and performed by Kevin himself, along with support from the Liars and music from Memphis’s own beloved punk duo HEELS. The show will also include an improv set with Kevin and the Liars to top it all off!
Kevin will also be teaching sketch writing workshops the mornings of April 13th and April 14th. Learn first hand how the Kids use improvisation and simple one-line premises to create sketch comedy quickly. Write sketches and get feedback from the sketch legend himself! MEET THE LIARS
Brandon McAninch
Director, Producer, Player since 2017
Brandon started doing improv in college as part of Mississippi State University’s Lab Rats Comedy in 2012. Years of learning, playing, and leading in Starkville ignited a passion that he would carry back to Memphis after completing his degree. After a brief hiatus, Brandon joined the Memphis Improv and Sketch Collective and played with MISC for two years. As an effort to further explore long form improv, Brandon co-created Bluff City Liars in 2017. Since then, Brandon has acted as director for BCL, plays in the long form cast, and hosts Improv Underground each month downtown.
Mike Degnan
Producer since 2019, Player since 2018
Mike has been doing comedy for Memphis Audiences for almost 15 years and thinking he’s funny for almost twice as long. Starting in standup, Mike joined The Wiseguys Improv Troupe in 2009 and then would go on to co-create and star in WKNO-TV’s “Professor Ghoul’s Horror School”, becoming Memphis’s first “horror host” since Sivad. While he is thankful for the laughs of audiences and the work he’s been a part of, what he is most thankful to have gotten from doing improv is his relationship with his wife Ashley, who first saw him on stage in 2009 and started dating him in 2014. He wishes this bio had jokes in it too.
Michelle Mathewes
Producer, Player since 2019
When Michelle was little, she wanted to be a soccer champ, reality TV star, and Big Bird. It is now only through improv that she can hope to achieve these dreams. Michelle joined the group (and the improv stage) in June 2019.
